To decentralize and contextualize nature conservation, the NCC has developed a participatory mapping project where citizen councils produce town maps. These maps reflect local interests and knowledge, and include geo-referenced cultural and natural landmarks which serve as a basis for local landscape planning. This methodology has been employed since 2011 through the Biodiversity Village Award (BVA), which invites local village communities to work collectively in order to improve the sustainability and eco-tourism in their respective villages.
