AUB leads Lebanon in latest QS University Rankings and is second in MENA

The American University of Beirut has maintained its position as top-ranked university in Lebanon and second in the Arab region according to data provided by one of the most influential international university rankings firms, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Limited.

AUB compares very favorably in the “QS University Rankings: Arab Region 2016” against considerably more-resourced universities in the Gulf region, preceded only by King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Dhahran which specializes in science and engineering programs.

Interim Provost Dr. Muhamad Harajli expressed delight in the latest rankings saying: “This significant accomplishment would not have been possible without the dedication and distinguished caliber of AUB faculty, our talented students, the hard work of our staff, and the support of the administration at all levels.”

AUB was one of 10 Lebanese universities in the top 100 rankings, with Lebanese American University in fifteenth place and Saint Joseph University at seventeenth.

University Librarian Dr. Lokman Meho said the QS ranking shows that AUB continues to maintain its leadership in the region in key areas covered by the survey.

“It was very pleasing to see AUB was given a perfect score in employer reputation and a near perfect score in academic reputation, which explains why our graduates are always in high demand globally by potential employers and why students from all over the world continue to seek admission to and enroll at AUB, despite the political instability in the region,” he said.

The University also ranked among the top five Arab world universities in the measures of faculty-student ratio, percentage of faculty with PhDs, percentage of international faculty, percentage of international students, and papers per faculty.

In terms of research quality, measured by citations per paper, AUB ranked second behind KFUPM, but well ahead of the other institutions.

The annual QS Arab region rankings highlight the 200 leading universities in this part of the world. The methodology is developed to reflect specific challenges and priorities for regional institutions. It also includes categories for academic reputation and web impact.

There is much debate about the accuracy of university rankings systems, but tables like the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and US News Best Global Universities provide one of the few external measures of university strength and can be a factor in how prospective students choose the right school.
