The Business Students Society (BSS) annually holds a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign for the whole month of October. Despite the country’s current circumstances, BSS still went ahead with this campaign in the best way possible: by collaborating with salons across Lebanon to provide AUB women with discounted/free haircuts should they offer to donate their hair to CrossTalk, an NGO in charge of collecting donations for cancer patients.
“Organizing this campaign, and then taking part in it by cutting and donating 25cm of my hair is an experience I’m very proud of. It’s a campaign that strongly presents the idea that the smallest things make a change,” shares Zeina Hamd, BSS cabinet member, adding, “through this initiative, we were not only supporting cancer patients and raising awareness, but we were also supporting Lebanese salons by giving them positive PR, and allowing them to gain new customers.”
BSS connected with 21 salons across Beirut and Mount Lebanon: Pace e Luce, Cherry Beauty Lounge, Salon Carlos Khoury, Ramy Nakhoul, Alain Sahyoun, Sasha Body and Nails, Ferneiniht, Salon Taleb, Cutting Edge, Dialas Hair, Joseph Haber, Salon Wassim Timani, K&A Beauty Salon, Amro Salon, Wael and Wajdi, Coquette Beauty Salon, Elie Tanjar Salon, Mohamad Bashir, and Mhamad Delbi.
“This month, I was inspired by the ‘BSS Turns Pink’ initiative to cut and donate my hair. They collaborated with multiple hair salons in Beirut and CrossTalk, and facilitated the process to make it much more accessible for many young women to donate their hair. It was a truly innovative effort in raising awareness for breast cancer! This experience was one of the most touching and humbling experiences I’ve ever had,” says Farah Bekhaazi, industrial engineer.
Another AUB psychology student, Roaa Eid, contributed to the BSS campaign: “I never thought I would cut my hair this short ever again, because I had regretted that decision the first time round. However, this was different. I didn’t even hesitate when I found out it was for a good cause. I’m glad I got to be part of this exciting initiative that was launched by the BSS to contribute to the women in my society. I hope this donation makes someone out there smile.”
