The number of students requesting financial assistance increased dramatically in 2019-20 due to the deteriorating economic circumstances in the country, the restrictions on bank accounts that made it all but impossible for people to access their savings, and the impact of COVID-19 on an already devastated economy. We have heard from many students since the August 4th explosion who will not be able to enroll in the fall unless they receive scholarship support. In some cases, the money that their parents had put aside to pay for tuition is being used to rebuild homes that were damaged or destroyed on August 4th. In other cases, parents have lost their jobs because the places where they worked no longer exist, and so can no longer afford to pay for their children's schooling.
