After 46 years of dedicated service to the American University of Beirut, the Department of Chemistry, and the scientific community, Prof. Makhlouf J. Haddadin was honored on the occasion of his 75
th birthday. In addition to his international reputation as an organic chemist, Professor Haddadin has been especially celebrated for his achievements in the area of heterocyclic chemistry that resulted in the publication of 99 scholarly papers in prestigious international journals. A landmark event in Professor Haddadin’s career was his co-discovery of the Beirut Reaction – a reaction that impacted the field of pharmaceutical chemistry and yielded 40 patents in numerous countries. As a professor of chemistry since 1965, he has excelled in teaching and research and has been called on to serve in many other capacities as well. He has held many key senior administration positions at AUB including vice president for academic affairs, acting dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, chairman of the Board of Graduate Studies, and university parliamentarian. One of Professor Haddadin’s most recent accomplishments was his election in August 2009 as the first Lebanon-based member of the prestigious Lebanese Academy of Sciences.
On that occasion, President Peter Doorman presented Prof. Haddadin with a Lifetime Achievement Award. It states:
