The Department of Neurology was one of the oldest divisions of the Internal Medicine Department which was established by Doctor Fuad Sabra in 1950 as one of the earliest neurological services in the Middle East. Since then, the division has grown into a modern service providing state-of-the-art medical care, teaching of medical students, research, and a postgraduate training program of the clinical neurology. The training program, which was established in 1983, has graduated more than fifteen neurologists who are practicing in Lebanon, the Arab countries, and the United States.
Dr. Samir Atweh, Professor and Chairman of Neurology, founded the Neurology department as a separate entity from the Department of Internal Medicine in 2011.
The Department of Neurology is committed to the mission of the Faculty of Medicine at AUB in providing excellent teaching of neurology and neuroscience to medical students, residents, and fellows.
Members of the division are involved in the teaching of the neurosciences starting with the basic courses in the first and second years of medical school. The department is also responsible for the teaching of clinical neurology to first, second, third and fourth year medical students, as well as the residents in internal medicine. This is done in the context of providing excellent clinical care. Members of the Department of Neurology are also involved in basic and clinical research in collaboration with the neuroscience research program of the University.
The neurology clinical service at AUBMC is one of the strongest in the country. It provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services that include a modern diagnostic clinical electrophysiology laboratory. The clinical service of the department also collaborates closely with other departments in the medical center including psychiatry, neurosurgery, and brain imaging facilities of the department of radiology.
